HPAI outbreak data in the U.S. over the past three months

4 March, 2025

The primary poultry involved are commercial table egg layers, primarily due to the size of their flocks. However, when considering outbreak hotspots, most are found in turkey flocks.

So, what should be done?

  1. Risk assessment
  2. Enhancing biosecurity measures on farms
  3. Increasing surveillance
  4. Regionalization - Defining and delineating regions (The U.S. is a large country, and a regional approach is required for avian influenza events. The country cannot be treated as a single entity.)
  5. Integrating vaccines based on risk assessment in designated regions and specific production sectors, while minimizing impacts on exports.
  6. Defining an exit strategy for vaccine use.
  7. Establishing appropriate vaccination programs.
  8. Defining a monitoring and surveillance program for vaccinated flocks.
  9. Implementing appropriate measures for dairy herds concerning biosecurity and vaccine use.
  10. A separate and comprehensive approach to avian influenza outbreaks in cats, particularly domestic cats.
