Japan: Avian Influenza and Rising Egg Prices

31 January, 2025

Recent outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza in Japan have severely impacted commercial layer flocks, leading to a sharp increase in egg prices. So far this season, 50 bird flu outbreaks have been confirmed at chicken farms across 14 prefectures, resulting in the culling of 9.27 million birds. The spread of this infectious disease has driven a significant spike in egg prices. As of early 2025, the cost of eggs in Japan has risen by 10% since the beginning of the year and is 60% higher than the average for the same period in previous years.
