Canada: first case of H5N5 avian influenza in a mammals

Officials have reported the emergence of Eurasian H5N5 avian influenza in Canadian wild birds, and for the first time, the virus has been detected in mammals—specifically, raccoons found deceased on Prince Edward Island. The raccoon deaths occurred in early April near Charlottetown, the capital of Prince Edward Island. According to the report, the fully Eurasian H5N5 virus had previously been identified in wild birds on Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick.
