Tesco boosts support for UK egg producers

4 August, 2023

Tesco has unveiled additional support measures for its British egg suppliers and producers amidst ongoing challenges in the market. These challenges stem from price hikes in essential inputs like feed and energy, as well as the impact of the avian flu outbreak. The comprehensive support package includes £13.6 million that Tesco has already extended to its suppliers and producers since March of this year. In addition, the company has committed to providing an extra £13.9 million of support until March 2023, with plans to continue assistance beyond that date.
Earlier in the year, Tesco had already initiated five-year contracts with its five main British shell egg suppliers - Anglia Free Range Eggs, Glenrath Farms, Griffiths Family Farms, Noble Foods, and Skea Eggs. These long-term contracts, which began in October, reinforce Tesco's commitment to stocking 100% British shell eggs in its stores. Furthermore, these contracts offer UK egg farmers the assurance they need to invest and plan for the future. Moreover, Tesco has confirmed its continued implementation of the industry-leading poultry feed model, which plays a vital role in the cost of production for egg and poultry farms. This model adapts to market price fluctuations, offering producers the necessary cost protection and security when purchasing feed. The support package will be provided to suppliers to cover handling, processing, and egg production costs, including any feed price increases for farmers.
