European Commission aims to cut farm antibiotic use

24 May, 2020

The European Commission announced new targets for reducing sales of antibiotics used on farms and in aquaculture.
The strategy sets concrete targets to transform the EUs food system, including a reduction by 50% of the use of pesticides, a reduction by at least 20% of the use of fertilizers, a reduction by 50% in sales of antimicrobials used for farmed animals and aquaculture, and reaching 25% of agricultural land under organic farming by 2030.
Commission officials say the strategy will enable the EU to transition to a sustainable food system that safeguards food security, ensures access to healthy diets, reduces the environmental and climate footprint of the EU food system, and strengthens resilience to future pandemics.
The Commission says antibiotic sales will be monitored on an annual basis.
