France: Outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza in Corsica

17 November, 2020

France has detected a highly pathogenic strain of avian influenza in a pet store in Haute-Corse.
All the birds in the shop have been euthanised. There were 575 specimens of various species (both for breeding and ornamental). The strain was identifies as H5N8.
Specific measures to monitor and limit movement around the Haute-Corse outbreak were put in place immediately to prevent any spread. Protective measures are also taken with suppliers and buyers linked to the Corsica home.
According to the Minister of Agriculture, the first elements of analysis of the H5N8 strain isolated in Corsica show a similarity with one of the strains currently circulating in the Netherlands.
