USDA Proposes Controversial Rule to Accelerate Processing Speeds at Poultry Plants

18 February, 2026

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) unveiled proposed regulations aimed at increasing line speeds at poultry production facilities. While the administration argues the move will benefit consumers, the proposal is already facing pushback from safety and welfare advocates.
Under the newly proposed guidelines, the maximum slaughter line speeds for chickens would see a significant jump, rising from 140 birds per minute (bpm) to 175 bpm. Similarly, turkey processing lines would be permitted to increase their speed from 55 to 60 bpm.
In a press release detailing the changes, the administration stated that the updated rules are designed to eliminate "outdated" operational bottlenecks. By streamlining these facilities, they argue, the industry can help lower food prices for consumers.
However, the proposed changes have sparked immediate concern among public health organizations and animal welfare groups. Critics strongly argue that forcing production lines to move faster inherently elevates the risk of severe workplace injuries for meatpacking employees and increases the likelihood of food contamination.
The proposed rule is currently open for a 60-day public comment period, allowing stakeholders, industry workers, and consumers to voice their opinions before any final decisions are made.
