Bird flu killing elephant seals in California

26 February, 2026

In a concerning development for marine conservation, California State Parks and researchers from the University of California, Davis, and UC Santa Cruz have confirmed the state’s first known cases of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) H5N1 in marine mammals. Seven weaned northern elephant seal pups (Mirounga angustirostris) at Año Nuevo State Park have tested positive for the virus, marking a significant milestone in the pathogen's trans-species spread along the Pacific Coast.
Researchers at the UC Santa Cruz northern elephant seal research program first observed abnormal clinical signs, including tremors, respiratory distress, and physical weakness among the colony on February 19 and 20. At least 30 elephant seals have died during this event so far. This count primarily includes weaned pups, but also at least one adult male.
Año Nuevo State Park is home to one of the largest mainland breeding colonies of elephant seals, with approximately 5,000 individuals during the peak winter season. Authorities have reacted swiftly, temporarily closing public access to seal viewing areas and canceling guided tours to mitigate the risk of further spread and to allow researchers to monitor the health of the remaining colony.
This incident is the result of the authorities' failure to effectively manage the avian influenza virus, which has spread across the Americas without an adequate professional response.
