Belgium bans non-stun slaughter

12 January, 2019

The slaughter of animals without pre-stunning is set to be significantly reduced in Belgium after a ban came into effect in the north of the country. The ban in the Flanders region of the country was put in place on New Year’s Day, following on from legislation that was passed by Belgium’s parliament in July 2017.  Similar restrictions are expected to be implemented in the country’s Wallonia region from September.
Slaughter of cows and calves will be exempt from the Walloon measure until a better stunning technique is developed for them.
