H5N8 avian influenza case in Riyadh

The Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture (MEWA) stated that H5N8 avian influenza virus was reported at Azizia bird market in Riyadh. The case was detected following surveillance of bird markets in the Kingdom.
The ministry has closed the bird market, prevented the movement of birds in the market, and disposed of the birds in a safe and efficient manner.
The last case of H5N8 in Saudi Arabia was recorded on April 17, 2018.
According to the last report submitted by Saudi Arabia to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) on July 3, the kingdom had noted 32 H5N8 bird flu outbreaks in total since December 2017. The outbreaks were noted in the districts of Riyadh, Al Kharj, Al Mazahmyia, Al Khobar, Al Aziziyah, Dhurma, Al Ahsa, Al Muzahimiyah, Jeddah, Thadiq, Al Qatif, Zulfi, Aldalem and Al Quwaiiyah.
While 264,330 cases were recorded in total, over 5.3 million birds were killed and disposed of, the report stated.
