Avian Influenza continues to spread in Germany

7 September, 2007

Authorities identified new cases in two more duck farms.
German authorities have ordered to kill 205,000 ducks after avian influenza was found on two duck farms in Hofing near Bruck, east of Nuremberg in the southern state of Bavaria.
Two weeks ago, dead ducks from the farm in Wachenroth in Bavaria's Erlangen-Hoechstadt area have been tested positive for the H5N1 virus strain (more than 160 000 ducks were slaughtered). The 2 businesses affected are subsidiaries of that farm.
Several cases of the H5N1 strain in wild birds has been identified in the German states of Bavaria and Sachsen in June.
