Japan confirms avian influenza case in chicken farm

Japan 13 January, 2007 The Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Ministry has confirmed the cause of the chicken death as avian influenza in the chicken farm in Miyazaki prefecture, which feeds around 12,000 chickens. Over 700 chickens in the farm died on Wednesday and Thursday and and reached 3,800 as of Saturday.
Local authorities will cull the rest chickens in the farm on Sunday (14/01) and take other measures to avoid the spread of the disease.
Miyazaki is Japan's largest breeder of chickens. As of last February, 394 farming households there had raised 18.44 million broiler chickens.
