South Korea says fifth avian influenza case confirmed

South Korea 20 January, 2007 South Korea has discovered a fifth case of avian influenza despite the culling of poultry after earlier cases. The latest case occurred at a poultry farm (Breeding chickens) in Chonan, South Chungcheong province, around 90 km south of the capital, Seoul, and about 8 km from Asan where the fourth case was found. South Korean quarantine authorities are preparing to slaughter more than 270,000 poultry. The latest outbreak, in the centre of South Korea, is the fifth since the virus reappeared in the country in November after a three year absence.
