Nigeria reports first human death from avian infuenza

Nigeria 31 January, 2007 Health officials reported Nigeria's first cases of avian influenza in humans on Wednesday, saying one woman had died and a family member had been infected but was responding to treatment.
The victim, a 22-year old woman in Lagos, died on 16 January 2007, the mother of the 22-year-old died on 4 January with similar symptoms.
Nigeria was the first African nation to report H5N1 avian influenza (08/02/06).
