Bangladesh confirms first avian influenza case at a poultry farm

Tens of thousands of birds have been culled after the country's first outbreak of the H5N1 strain of avian influenza was confirmed on six farms outside Dhaka yesterday. Among more than 42,400 poultry on the six farms in Savar, over 12,000 had died and another 21,000 had been culled over the past few days.
Laboratory tests in Bangladesh and Thailand confirmed a poultry farm at Savar (25 km from the capital Dhaka), run by the state-owned Biman Bangladesh Airlines, was infected by the H5N1 virus.
