India: India reported an outbreak of avian influenza among poultry

Northeastern region of India 25 July, 2007 The first since it declared itself free of the disease last August. A total of 132 birds died at the Manipur farm over six days beginning July 7. Laboratory tests on the chickens that died at a single farm in Chingmeirong village of Manipur's East Imphal district, confirmed that the birds had been infected by the highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI-H5) strain. This outbreak is the first of avian influenza reported in India this year. Manipur is situated in the northeastern region of India.
