Serbia: H5 detected in swan

Serbia 7 February, 2008 National media reported on 7 February that H5 avian influenza has been detected in samples taken from a swan captured near Lake Apatina (near Brcka Palanka). The wild bird was captured on February 5 during routine veterinary testing of local waterfowl. According to a veterinary official, the swan that originated from Poland carried the H5 virus but further testing will be conducted in order to determine whether the virus was H5N1. Samples have been sent to Weybridge in the UK and results are still pending. Local veterinarians have intensified surveillance in the area of Apatina and Brcka Plankam, and samples have been taken from 30 swans.
