Nigeria: Avian influenza Resurfaces in Bauchi State

24 July, 2009

Nigerian authorities announced on Friday, 24 July, that H5N1 avian influenza (AI) has resurfaced in Bauchi state, after 8 months without reported outbreaks of AI. The outbreak has spread to other farms in Azare and Misau cities, and last month the virus reappeared in 3 other northern states, including Katsina, Sokoto and Kano. In the affected farms, authorities reportedly culled hundreds of chickens and disinfected the facilities in which all the chickens were kept in order to contain the spread of the virus. The Avian Influenza has been declared to be present in 27 out the 36 states in Nigeria.
