France: Avian influenza virus found in a breeding duck flock

Low pathogenic H5N3 avian influenza strain was found in a breeding duck flock in Vendee (Les Brandes, La Garnache), France.
The affected farm has only one closed premises with about 5,000 breeding ducks in late moult (no lay) and aged 12 months. First signs were obsereved on Thursday 29 January 2009. All ducks were slaughter on the 1 of February 2009.
H5 and H7 avian influenza in its low pathogenic form in poultry is a notifiable disease.
Japan has suspended imports of raw foie gras and poultry from France. Tokyo suspended imports of chicks and poultry meat on Tuesday after French officials informed Japan of an outbreak of the H5 strain of bird flu at a duck farm in western Vendee province. Japan bought 404 tonnes of uncooked foie gras in 2008.
