Nepal reports first outbreak of avian influenza

Nepal 16 January, 2009 H5N1 strain of avian influenza was diagnosed in backyard poultry in Kakarvitta (Jhapa) - Nepal. The area is a major border transit point for goods and animals from neighbouring Indian states of West Bengal and Assam. Nepal banned imports of ducks and chicken from India last month, citing growing reports of avian influenza cases in West Bengal and Assam, but smuggling continues.
This is the first avian influenza H5N1 outbreak in Nepal.
